Angels are referred to together as a heavenly host

Psalm 103:20, 21 Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.

Psalm 148:2  Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

The idea of hosts is also attached to armies and to stars. The angels form a great army, an army of light. (Cf Job 38:7; Revelation 9:1, 11).

Angels are on rare occasions referred to as gods

Psalm 8:5 You have made them a little lower than the angels (gods) and crowned them with glory and honour.

Psalm 97:7 All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols -  worship him, all you gods!

See

Hebrews 2:7 You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honour

Hebrews 1:6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him."

2:7 Angels are mighty ones, gods of a sort.

Angels are sometimes referred to as Sons of God

Job 1:6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.

Job 2:1 On another day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him.

Job 38:6, 7 On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone - while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

(Psalm 89:6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? [Sons of God])

Not only Christ an his people but angels, because they are so close to God, are known in the Bible as sons of God.

Angels are not the only heavenly creatures, there are also seraphim

Isaiah 6:1-6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.

(See also Revelation 4:7, 8)

Seraphim (flaming ones) may be the same as cherubim but they may be a different rank of creature to angels or cherubim.

Angels are not the only heavenly creatures, there are also cherubim

Genesis 3:24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Exodus 25:17-21 Make an atonement cover of pure gold--two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. And make two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover. Make one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; make the cherubim of one piece with the cover, at the two ends. The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. Place the cover on top of the ark and put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law that I will give you.

Ezekiel 10 I looked, and I saw the likeness of a throne of lapis lazuli above the vault that was over the heads of the cherubim. The LORD said to the man clothed in linen, "Go in among the wheels beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city." And as I watched, he went in. Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court. Then the glory of the LORD rose from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the radiance of the glory of the LORD. The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks. When the LORD commanded the man in linen, "Take fire from among the wheels, from among the cherubim," the man went in and stood beside a wheel. Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand to the fire that was among them. He took up some of it and put it into the hands of the man in linen, who took it and went out. (Under the wings of the cherubim could be seen what looked like human hands.) I looked, and I saw beside the cherubim four wheels, one beside each of the cherubim; the wheels sparkled like topaz. As for their appearance, the four of them looked alike; each was like a wheel intersecting a wheel. As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the cherubim faced; the wheels did not turn about as the cherubim went. The cherubim went in whatever direction the head faced, without turning as they went. Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands and their wings, were completely full of eyes, as were their four wheels. I heard the wheels being called "the whirling wheels." Each of the cherubim had four faces: One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human being, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle. Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had seen by the Kebar River. When the cherubim moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the cherubim spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not leave their side. When the cherubim stood still, they also stood still; and when the cherubim rose, they rose with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in them. Then the glory of the LORD departed from over the threshold of the temple and stopped above the cherubim. While I watched, the cherubim spread their wings and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with them. They stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the LORD's house, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them. These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kebar River, and I realized that they were cherubim. Each had four faces and four wings, and under their wings was what looked like human hands. Their faces had the same appearance as those I had seen by the Kebar River. Each one went straight ahead.

Angels are not to be consulted for guidance but we are to consult God's Word

Deuteronomy 18:10-15 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.

Isaiah 8:19, 20 When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? Consult God's instruction and the testimony of warning. If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.

Both passages make clear that we are not to consult any sort of spirit, including angels good or bad. Rather we must consult God's Word, in which Christ is revealed.

Angels are able to open locked doors

In Acts 5:19 we read that, in order to rescue Peter and John from prison, during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. This suggests that angels have complete command of physical barriers. They cannot be chained or held back by any physical barrier. This is not surprise as they are essentially spiritual creatures.

Angels are real personalities

In Luke 1:19 Gabriel says to Zechariah, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news." He has a name and can speak and refers to himself in the first person. He cannot therefore be a mere natural force or a psychological phenomenon. If we believe the Bible, we are compelled to believe in angels.

Angels have always had their doubters and detractors

In a footnote in Acts 23:8 Luke tells us that The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things. There have been sceptics in every age who deny the existence of angels. It is not unique to our own modern times. We ought not to be surprised then at unbelief. No doubt the angels themselves take a low view of their doubters while the demons chuckle to themselves at their success.

Angels prevent harm coming to God's servants

In Daniel 6:22 Daniel says to the king "My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty." Whether Daniel saw anything or not he certainly believed, and this is now in Scripture, that it was angels who keep the mouths of the lions shut so that they did not harm God's servant. No doubt angels often intervene so that God's servants are kept from harm.
Wesley comments on Daniel 6:22 "See the power of God over the fiercest creatures! See the care God takes of his faithful servants, especially when they are called to suffer for him! See how ready the angels are to minister to the heirs of salvation!"
Joseph Exell says "The text in Daniel suggests the whole doctrine of angel-ministration. That imperilled life guarded by a sentinel from heaven is no solitary spectacle. It has many parallels. There had been the ministration of angels before, as there has been a thousand times since."

Angels mass in heaven to worship God with believers

Hebrews 12:22, 23 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect ...

Angels strengthened Jesus as he came to the cross

Luke 22:43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
Matthew 26:53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
Only Luke mentions this. As the angel appeared only to Jesus it may be wondered how Luke knew. It is suggested that such a change came over the Saviour that it was obvious to the disciples who then passed it on, Luke discovering ti when he wrote his Gospel.

Matthew Henry says of how when Christ was in his agony and there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him that this was a part of his humiliation - that he was thus strengthened by a ministering spirit.

Angels tell people not to be afraid when they appear

Genesis 21:17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.
Luke 1:13 But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.
Luke 1:30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.
Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
Matthew 28:5 The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

Angels often startle people and make them afraid when they appear

Daniel 10:4-8  On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless.
Luke 1:12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.
Luke 2:9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them (the shepherds), and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
Matthew 29:2-4 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

Gill notes how in the case of Zechariah he was troubled, and fear fell upon him; for such appearances of angels were not now so common as formerly: and when they were more usual, generally had such effects on the minds, even of good men and in the case of the shepherds - at the sight of such a personage, and at such unusual light and glory about them: they ... not used to such appearances ... were awed with the majesty of God, of which these were symbols, and were conscious to themselves of their own sinfulness and frailty.

Angels are all in submission to Jesus Christ

1 Peter 3:22 ... who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand - with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
After his resurrection Jesus ascended to heaven where he now sits on God's right hand. Every angel and every authority, clean and unclean, is subject and submissive to him. He is their Lord.

Angels are to be honoured but not worshipped

Revelation 19:10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Don't do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus."
Angels are wonderful creatures and it is tempting, if one sees them in all their glory, to worship them but they are not to be worshipped. Only God is to be worshipped.

Angels come with bad news from God

Genesis 19:12, 13 The two men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here--sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."
The angels come not only bearing good news but bad news too as in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Angels come with good news from God

Genesis 19:9, 10a ... "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him. "There, in the tent," he said. Then one of them said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son."
Luke 1:11-17 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous - to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
Luke 1:19 The angel said to him, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
Luke 1:26-33 In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end."
Three obvious examples are the announcements of the births of Isaac, John adn Jesus. Perhasp that of Samson in Judges 13 could be added.

Angels (messengers) bring messages from God and must be honoured

Genesis 18:2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
In one of the earliest references to angels in the Bible they are spoken of as men, as that is what they looked like. In Genesis 18:13, 14, 17ff and especially 19:1 it becomes clear that these are more than men, however. Whether we understand the three as God and two angels or simply three angels, here are messengers from heaven, bringing good news and bad to Abraham.

Angels always obey God

Psalm 103:20, 21 Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.
Instinctively and immediately angels always obey God's commands. This is the main basis for the part of the Lord's prayer wherewe are to ask that God's will be done on earth as in heaven.

Angels are capable of swift flight

Daniel 9:21 ... while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.
Swift flight is no doubt a metaphor of some sort, a theriomorph of some description. What it identifies is the ability of Gabriel and other angels, no doubt, to travel speedily. Without the aid of machines or other helps of that sort they are able to cover huge distances in a short time.
This would seem to fit in with
Revelation 14:6 Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth - to every nation, tribe, language and people.
Also Psalm 104:4 (quoted in Hebrews 1:14) He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants.
